ANTHONY J. TRENGA
Anthony J. Trenga, former Chair of the Litigation Department and former member of the firm’s Executive Committee, specializes exclusively in litigation and trial practice, the large majority of which focuses on business torts, fraud based, fiduciary and other complex claims arising out of financial or business transactions. Mr. Trenga also has extensive experience in the evaluation and presentation of scientific and technical evidence and international evidence gathering issues.
Mr. Trenga has served as lead litigation and trial counsel in many complex, high stakes matters, both jury and non-jury, and has broad experience in the supervision and management of large litigation teams and in multiple and parallel proceedings. By way of example, in the securities area, he has defended at trial a $65 million fraud on the market 10b-5 class action, obtained a multi-million dollar recovery for securities fraud on behalf of a group of 122 plaintiffs, and successfully defeated both take-over attempts of public companies and challenges to tender offers for control of public companies. In the RICO area, he has obtained on behalf of a government sponsored secondary mortgage market maker a $60 million RICO judgment for systematic fraud by a seller and servicer of mortgages and successfully defeated at trial and on appeal RICO class action claims. He has obtained at trial defense verdicts in a $35 million environment clean up case and a $900 million breach of contract case and successfully defended at trial the award of a $4 billion military contract. He has served as lead trial and litigation counsel for numerous Fortune 500 companies, including General Motors and Rolls Royce Corporation, on whose behalf he obtained against Northrop Corporation, after an eight-week jury trial, one of the largest verdicts of 2002, as listed by the National Law Journal. More recently, following internal corporate, congressional, grand jury, SEC and federal administrative investigations, Mr. Trenga has served as lead trial/litigation counsel in actions by and against former corporate officers on ERISA and corporate governance issues. Mr. Trenga is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
By appointment of the Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court, he has served on the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board. He has also been a member of the Virginia State Bar Client Protection Fund and the Virginia State Bar Continuing Legal Education Committee. He currently serves on the Panel of Arbitrators for the National Association of Securities Dealers.
Mr. Trenga has been active in community affairs, including Chairman and member of the Alexandria Human Rights Commission, the Board of Directors of the Northern Virginia Urban League, the Board of Trustees of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, and the Board of Directors for the Bethesda Center of Excellence.
After graduating from University of Virginia School of Law, Mr. Trenga was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Ted Dalton, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, from 1974 to 1975.
Mr. Trenga lectures frequently on litigation and trial practice issues. He has served as a member of the faculty of the National Trial Advocacy College at the University of Virginia, sponsored by the Virginia CLE Committee of the Virginia Bar Foundation. He also participates regularly on professional panels on a variety of litigation topics, both in the United States and Europe, including electronic discovery, trial techniques, and international evidence, jurisdictional, privilege and discovery issues.
