STEPHEN A. SALTZBURG
Stephen A. Saltzburg has been the Wallace and Beverley Woodbury University Professor at the George Washington University Law School since January, 2004. From 1990-2004, he was the Howrey Professor of Trial Advocacy, Litigation and Professional Responsibility. Before that, he taught at the University of Virginia School of Law from 1972 to 1990, and was named the first Chairholder of the Class of 1962 Endowed Chair. In 1996, Professor Saltzburg founded and became the Director of a new Masters Program in Litigation and Dispute Resolution at George Washington. Professor Saltzburg served as Reporter for and then as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and as a member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Evidence. Professor Saltzburg was the Reporter for the Civil Justice Reform Act Committee for the District of Columbia District Court and then became chair of that Committee. Professor Saltzburg has served as a Special Master in two class action cases in the District of Columbia District Court, and continues to serve as a mediator for the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. He also has mediated a wide variety of disputes involving public agencies as well as private litigants; has served as a sole arbitrator, panel chair, and panel member in domestic arbitrations; and has served as sole arbitrator and as a panel member for the International Chamber of Commerce. From 1987 to 1988, Professor Saltzburg served as Associate Independent Counsel in the Iran-Contra investigation. In 1988 and 1989, Professor Saltzburg served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice, and in 1989 and 1990 was the Attorney General's ex officio representative on the United States Sentencing Commission. In June, 1994, the Secretary of the Treasury appointed Professor Saltzburg as the Director of the Tax Refund Fraud Task Force, a position he held until January, 1995. Professor Saltzburg is the author of numerous books and articles on evidence, procedure, and litigation. He is a member of the ABA House of Delegates from the Criminal Justice Section, the ABA Task Force on Gatekeeper Regulation and the Profession, and the ABA Task Force on Enemy Combatants. In 2003-2004, Professor Saltzburg chaired the ABA Justice Kennedy Commission which examined criminal justice issues relating to punishment, sentencing, incarceration, racial disparities, commutations, pardons, compassionate release, prison conditions and reentry. He now co-chairs the ABA Commission on Effective Criminal Sanctions and is Chair-Elect of the ABA Criminal Justice Section.
